christian formation

What is Christian Formation?
Christian Formation means being trained, equipped, and transformed into loving Christian people in the world today. At St. David's, we are trying to be shaped more and more--formed--into people who truly look and act like Jesus. "To maturity, the measure of the full stature of Christ. " (Ephesians 4:13)

NURSERY

Available during our 9:30 AM service, staffed by a professional childcare worker
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." (Matthew 19:14)

GODLY PLAY

Godly Play is based on the stories of our faith. It involves the children in the stories first through hearing and then being invited to create something based on the story or to act the story out in their own way. More important than hearing our stories, though, is the community that is built through the storytelling, working together and sharing our own stories as a group. We invite all to participate.

GODLY PLAY 1
During the 9:30 a.m. worship service in the program year

Early in the service we process out as the Children follow a young Crucifer to Atrium 1. Adult leaders and children gather together following the Godly Play curriculum which is rooted in the Montessori tradition. Then we return to the nave in time to participate in Communion.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Wednesdays, 6:45 - 8:15 PM
Our Middle School students (grades 6 - 8) meet on several Wednesday evenings a month in the Oratory/Conference Room. Please check the calender for meeting evenings. Our mission is to give students the opportunity to take ownership of their faith while feeling the freedom to wrestle with questions in a safe environment. We use the Episcopal Curriculum for Youth (developed by Virginia Theological Seminary) and spend our time in prayer, building community, formation, and mission.

CONFIRMATION

Confirmation in the Episcopal Church is "the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop." (Book of Common Prayer, p. 860) Our Confirmation program is designed for those in 9th grade and above who are interested in publicly re-affirming their baptismal vows. This is a two year program that focuses on both learning and doing.

The first year involves choosing a mentor from the congregation to be a guide throughout the process and taking part in a ministry internship as well as fulfilling other specified requirements. In the second year, a team of clergy and lay volunteers lead a class where we examine the basics of the Christian Faith making room for prayer, reflection, and questioning.

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

6:45-8:15 PM several Wednesdays a month

Our Sr. High youth group (grades 9-12) meets in the Youth Room. Please check the calendar for dates.

Our goal is to create a safe and honest environment for questions, doubts, and fears…a place where no matter where you are in your faith journey you are warmly welcomed. Through prayer, community building, formation, and mission we try to create space for our youth to grow in their faith and engage the issues that are relevant to youth today.

We frequently, but not exclusively, use the Episcopal Curriculum for Youth (developed by Virginia Theological Seminary).  Friends are always welcome, and you do not need to be a member of St. David's to attend.
